flashback...

... to a time when I was 7 or 8. I think I remember the age in particular cause I was singing along to this song while playing with my Barbies, and it wasn't too long after I started school.

I loved the lyrics, and I always thought it was some super dude rock star who sang this song. The lyrics, the tune, the emotion of the song caught on with me and I love this song. Plus, for a 7/8 year old kid, one line in particular was easy to follow:

"and I said HEEEYYYY... HEEEEYYYY.. I SAID HEY! What's going on!"

And I'd annoy everyone with this line because that was the only line I knew of the song.
A year or so later, I learnt another line when it was being played on the airwaves once again.

"And I pray, oh my God, do I pray.."

And there were two lines that I knew how to sing of that song.

Growing up, I always loved listening to it - I'd sing along to it to anyone who'd play the song, and it never really struck me to find out who sang it, or what the song lyrics were about. It was love, plain and simplest. =)

Finally, today, again I heard it when I was in Giant shopping for household stuff with my mom. I know, completely random and the last place people would actually expect this song to be played. And I exclaimed, "oh my gosh this is my favourite song! I love this!" and my mom went, "heh, I know.. it was mine too for a while.."

And 5 minutes ago, I finally got around to Googling this song.

It's "What's Up" by the 4 Non Blondes.

To my surprise, it was sung by a girl who (in the music video) was wearing some Willy Wonka-esque hat.
